about

airhead is a trio consisting of Connor Tutins, Zach Muth, and flora flora. we are good friends with a mutual understanding and trust in one another's musical decisions. when we conceived of the trio, connor came up with this name because the three of us are respectively libra, aquarius, and gemini, which are the three signs of the zodiac associated with the air element.
this is a recording of our first time playing together as a trio, at my house. we played electric guitars without amplification*, so there was a lot of air in the sound. we recorded to a portable tape player with a fairly noisy microphone, for even more air. it is really like a quintet with the air in the room and the air in the tape recorder.
the entire session was improvised, and each side of the tape was recorded in one continuous take. tracks 1-5 comprise side A, and tracks 6-8 comprise side B. i have kept the recording in chronological order without any outtakes. the separation between tracks is only for creative/thematic/narrative purposes.
connor and zach play guitar throughout. i play mostly guitar, with a section of piano on track 2 ("meow"), and moments of toy harps, recorders, brushes, sticks, glass, and paper throughout.

track 3 ("solar spiral") dedicated to Miles Davis with gratitude for his composition "solar"
track 4 ("rhythmachine") named for & dedicated to Kodwo Eshun with gratitude for his book "More Brilliant Than The Sun: Adventures In Sonic Fiction"

*connor and i played electric semi-hollowbody guitars with no amplification whatsoever. zach's guitar was a solid-body, so to match our volume, he played at the lowest possible level on a small crate amplifier facing away from the recorder.
